Propeo
is an executive search firm, and as
such, our activities are focused on assisting our clients fill key positions.
However, we find that during the course of
our conversations with executive candidates, we are asked for advice on career
management. While providing career counsel is not our core business, we do
have some views on the matter, and this section of our site is aimed at
delivering some basic signposts.
We live today in what is probably the best ever era in human
history. The rate of change in our
world in the last two decades has been breathtaking and exhilarating, and in our
view, its greatest gift has been the opening up of more opportunities for more
people than could have been dreamt of just one generation ago.
The world has never in its history ever offered more possibilities for
people to advance themselves and make their dreams a reality.
However, this explosion of opportunity has brought with it greater
competition, and to be successful you must raise your game to the new standards.
You have seen enough CVs and
conducted enough interviews to be able to evaluate senior candidates.
Therefore
you know what you want to see in others. But what about you? How do
you stack up against your own criteria? We come across many capable
executives who are short-changing themselves with regard to their own
development, and this always catches up with them - mostly when they want to
move jobs. As Stephen Covey might say, they are failing to "sharpen
the saw".
We believe there are two key
questions that you must address as a starting point in progressing your career.
Our advice is that you engage in a process of challenging yourself, testing your
assumptions, and answering two important questions:
-
What's really going on in the the
world of 21st century business?
-
What can you offer that is of value in
that world?
A lot is changing out there! You had
better know what it is, and how you are going to turn it to your advantage, or
you risk becoming a victim of it!
